Functional Eyelid Surgery

Functional eyelid surgery is eyelid surgery performed for medical reasons. Insurance coverage depends on whether the surgery repairs a condition that impairs vision for driving or other visual tasks or causes eye discomfort. Surgery to improve your appearance is considered cosmetic surgery and is not covered by medical insurance.

Drooping Eyelid Covering People

Dr. Michael Landa is an experienced surgeon and treats many functional eye problems, which include:

Excess Skin and Puffiness Around Eyes (dermatochalasis) – Aging can cause the skin around the eye area to sag and, for some people, this can impair vision. Dr. Landa can correct this with a blepharoplasty, a surgical procedure intended to remove excess skin and fat to correct associated visual impairment.

Drooping of Upper Eye Lids (ptosis) – Ptosis occurs when the upper eyelid droops and partially covers the pupil due to muscle impairment. This can obscure vision and is corrected with a surgical procedure to tighten the muscle that controls eyelid movement.

Out-Turned Eyelids (ectropion) – Ectropion is an out-turning of the eyelid, caused by aging. This prevents normal draining of tears, and typically leads to irritation and eye dryness. Surgery tightens the problem eyelid and restores normal function of the eyelid.

Inward-Turned Eyelids (entropion) – Entropion occurs when the eyelid turns inwards, which can occur due to injury or aging. This causes irritation and pain, and may cause keratitis and other problems. We perform entropion repair to restore the eyelid to its normal position.

Skin Cancer – When skin cancer develops, it’s important that the cancer be removed as soon as possible after detection, to prevent the cancer from spreading.

Blocked Eyelid Glands (chalazion and styes) – A chalazion develops when the duct of the oil-producing gland of the upper or lower eyelid becomes blocked. Blocked glands can cause discomfort, pain, and may impair vision. If non-surgical treatments aren’t effective, surgery may be necessary to remove the chalazion.
